# Gemini

> Google ecosystem assistant where sources are optional

## Background: provider and product surface

Gemini is Google’s general-purpose AI assistant. It can connect to Google Search, Knowledge Graph, Workspace, Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Maps, YouTube, Photos, and user-configured Gems. GEO should separate Gemini from Google AIO and AI Mode because it is an assistant surface rather than a SERP feature.

## Usage scale and market context

| Metric | Reported value | Context |
| -------------------------- | ---------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Gemini app monthly users | 400M+ MAU | Public Google I/O-era statements and reporting |
| Broader Google AI surfaces | 1B+ monthly users | May include broader Google AI surfaces, not Gemini app-only MAU |
| Product context | Assistant + Google ecosystem | Separate Gemini app, Workspace, Android, and Search-adjacent surfaces |

## Product surface and user experience

* Appears across Gemini app, Workspace side panels, Android/Pixel, and Google products.
* May show double-check/source links, but is not citation-first like Perplexity.
* User context and Google account data can influence personalization.
* Supports multimodal inputs including text, voice, images, and camera.

## GEO characteristics

| Axis | Engine-specific behavior | GEO interpretation |
| ------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Retrieval substrate | Google ecosystem + optional Search grounding + Knowledge Graph | Entity understanding can matter more than source citations |
| Citation UI | Answer-dependent citation UI | Recommendations without visible sources can still be visibility signals |
| Query fan-out | Semantic intent plus tool/grounding decisions | Fan-out is hard to infer from citations alone |
| Personalization | Gmail/Workspace/Maps/YouTube/Photos connections possible | Personal/work context can change answers |
| Measurement note | Separate parametric/entity visibility from dynamic citation | A recommendation without visible sources is not necessarily failure |

### Key cited / influential source types

| Source type | Observed pattern | GEO action |
| ------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- |
| Owned brand website | Gemini appears relatively friendly to brand-owned content | Improve official product, pricing, FAQ, and entity clarity |
| Google ecosystem sources | Business Profile, YouTube, Maps, Workspace-adjacent content | Keep Google-owned surface information consistent |
| Entity anchors | Organization schema, sameAs, Wikidata/Crunchbase/LinkedIn | Disambiguate brand, category, and competitors |
| Third-party reviews/media | G2, Capterra, media, industry pages | Strengthen recommendation confidence |
| Internal answer surfaces | product/pricing/guide surfaces are stronger final-answer candidates | Clarify shallow official answer pages |

## Engine-specific GEO strategy

| Strategy | Action | Metric |
| ----------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------- |
| Clean up entity graph | Align sameAs, schema, external profiles, and brand descriptions | Entity correctness |
| Measure recommendation, not only citation | Track mention, top recommendation, and sentiment in answers without visible sources | Mention/recommendation rate |
| Maintain Google ecosystem hygiene | Align GBP, YouTube, product data, and category info | Google ecosystem consistency |
| Test category/competitor mapping | Check how Gemini classifies brand category and competitor set | Classification accuracy |

## What to measure

* Usage scale and surface-specific exposure
* Source/citation presence and source type
* Brand mention, recommendation, sentiment, and claim accuracy
* Engine-specific failure mode: retrieval, citation, or recommendation
