# Citations

> Understand where AI answers pull citations from

Citations shows the source landscape behind AI answers. Visibility tells you whether your brand appears; Citations tells you which domains, pages, and content formats AI engines use as evidence.

## When to use Citations

Use Citations when you need to answer:

* Are AI engines citing our official site or third-party sources?
* Which competitor domains are being co-cited?
* Which source categories matter most: reviews, editorial, commerce, social, institutions, or PR wires?
* Which content patterns already earn citations in our prompt set?
* Which domains and pages should we target with Earn or Generate work?

## Period selector

Choose **7d**, **30d**, **60d**, or **90d** from the header. Short windows show fresh movement; longer windows give a more stable source map.

## Overview metrics

The overview card summarizes:

| Metric | What it means |
| --------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Total citations** | Number of cited URLs across the selected period. |
| **Unique domains** | How broad the cited source set is. |
| **Source mix** | Owned, competitor, and third-party citation shares. |
| **Analysis coverage** | How many cited pages were selected for deeper classification. |

<Note>
A high third-party dependency is not always bad. It means AI engines trust outside evidence for your category. Use [Earn](/dashboard/earn) to decide which third-party channels to win next.
</Note>

## Top sources

Top sources ranks the cited domains and expands to show top pages per domain. Domains are grouped by bucket and category:

| Bucket | Meaning |
| --------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Owned** | Official hosts, docs, and brand-owned subdomains. |
| **Competitor** | Competitors registered in the workspace. |
| **Third-party** | Editorial, reviews, commerce, social, institutions, PR wires, and other external sources. |

Click a domain row to inspect its top cited pages and citation counts.

## Source breakdown

Source breakdown gives three diagnostic views:

1. **Source types** - Citation share by owned, competition, editorial, reviews, commerce, social, PR wire, institution, and other categories.
2. **Content patterns** - Formats such as guides/docs, comparison listicles, pricing, product pages, community forums, research reports, and vendor sites.
3. **Engine and prompt leaders** - Which AI engines and prompts drive the most citation volume.

## Cited page intelligence

When enough citation data exists, Anymorph highlights cited-page opportunities such as:

* Owned pages already cited and worth refreshing.
* Competitor or peer pages AI engines rely on.
* Representative third-party sources that define a category.
* Pages that can become Generate, Fix, or Earn opportunities.

## How to act on Citations

| If you see... | Do this |
| ---------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Owned pages are cited but stale | Update the page in your CMS or create a [Fix](/dashboard/fix) action. |
| Competitor citations dominate | Build comparison or alternative pages in [Generate](/dashboard/generate). |
| Review sites dominate | Claim listings and improve review profiles through [Earn](/dashboard/earn). |
| Community/social sources dominate | Add authentic Q\&A, forum, Reddit, or creator-sourced evidence to your content plan. |
| Guides/docs are the winning format | Publish structured how-to pages with short, quotable answer blocks. |

## Empty or preparing state

If the page says **Preparing citation insights**, citation snapshots are still building. Try the 7-day period or return after the latest visibility run completes.
